Meet Athena - Our Instructor
Hi, I'm Athena. I started signing when my first daughter (now 3) was about 4 months old. I always wanted to sign with her and the Signing Time DVDs allowed us both to learn ASL signs in a fun, easy way. Before she was one she was communicating so much with us. I loved how we could be out shopping and all of a sudden she would start signing "apple" or "fish" because that was what she had seen. Signing not only allowed her to let us know what she wanted, but also provided a window into her world about what she saw. We also used signs while she was learning her colors and it really seemed to help her remember that this color is not only the word "red", but the color corresponds to the sign and the sign means "red".
As the verbal ability took off in my first daughter, we started decreasing the amount of signing we did. Then when our second daughter came (now 16 months), we really weren't signing much at all. I was just in survival mode with a 2-year-old and a newborn. We taught her a couple signs like "hurt" and "nice." When she was about 13-months-old, I realized that she wasn't speaking nearly as much as her sister and we really jumped with a gusto back into signing. Being a little older, she picked up signs very quickly and her vocabulary, both signed and spoken, has increased. I love watching her sit with a book, look at the pictures, and start signing what she sees.
I am certified through the Signing Time Academy to teach children, parents, care-givers, and professionals. I look forward to meeting you and your family as you experience the wonderful learning and bonding the comes with signing
